Search Engine Optimization Service
Last year I started researching why small to medium sized businesses fail to generate the level of online activity they had anticipated. I spend a large chunk of my working life online, helping entrepreneurs and start-up businesses erect their digital billboard (website) online. This is the first step in “making it” on the web.
The problem many people don’t realize when they start out online is that this is just the FIRST of several necessary steps for online success. There has to be active follow up – you need to get in the faces of your prospective customers – not aggressively, just so they know you exist! This doesn’t just happen. Whatever your field is, there are many thousands, maybe millions, of other people out there doing the same thing. You are all hoping that people will find you online and be drawn to do business with you.
Millions can be made online, in any business – but your market is competitive. It is one thing to have the best products, or the cheapest prices. And of course everyone promises the best customer experience.
There are many possible paths to your website: search engines, social media, paid advertising, face-to-face networking, word of mouth, YouTube videos, and many others. When people are looking for whatever you offer, nine times out of ten, they will go to their favourite search engine and type a word, phrase or sentence about what there want.
What do you do to attract online customers?
Do a test here: what do you think people will type into Google when they are looking for whatever you offer. Go ahead and type that in and click to search. Does your business come up on the first page? Second page? Third? Don’t bother going further than that because if you are further back, nobody will ever find you unless they are specifically looking for you.
Do you find this depressing? If you do, that’s okay. Accept it for what it is.
Now you know what you need to do.
You need to optimize your website to improve your rankings with Google, Yahoo, Bing and all the other search engines out there. You need Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
Unfortunately the kind of work required to boost your site up the search charts isn’t a job you can just hand over to someone else to do.
Spoiler alert: If anyone offers to “do it all” for you, do yourself a favour, walk away and don’t look back. There are a lot of fly-by-night, so-called SEO experts out there who will promise to do all the work for you. They will promise page one ranking. Wonderful, huh? I’ve heard many horror stories, and have yet to find anyone who is happy with the results – and many of these folks have spent thousands based on the promises.
What you really need, is a methodical approach that will gather the facts, compare your site to your competition – all those sites with better ranking than yours – then work out a plan to beat them. The aim its to get your site as close to number one in the results as possible; but realize that there is not a quick fix. It could take many months to see a meaningful result.
What we will do, is deconstruct what works in your industry, find a way to improve on it, and implement this improvement on your site. Careful research and preparation is the key to success; and even if you go no further than that, you’ll be way ahead of most of your competitors.
To be really successful, you will have to do some of the work too. The good news is that the really dull, dreary part, the research and SEO planning is something that I am good at – and I actually enjoy doing it too! I love that analytical, investigative digging! Talk about win-win.
Because every business and niche is unique, your solution will be unique to you and your business.
